Are all Italian cab drivers good looking? Well maybe only the real ones. We met the fake one the minute we stumbled away from the baggage carousel. After hours and hours of flying across the Atlantic we probably looked something like we felt. Outside the airport building and right underneath the sign saying Taxi stood a gentleman (I use the term loosely) with a lanyard around his neck. He looked like the real thing so like well behaved Canadian tourists we approached him and asked for a taxi. The problem was that we only wanted to go to one of the airport hotels – not a very good fare apparently. According to my research prior to departure a cab fare of no more than 15 Euros. Our Lanyard Man passed us over to one of his “colleagues” who told us to follow him while he headed back into the airport terminal. Hang on a minute, we thought. Where is the taxi and what is the fare? Oh 30 Euros – I don’t think so. An attempted scam. So back to the taxi lineup and without any problem or “assistance” from Lanyard Man a little yellow taxi cab pulled up to the curb. The driver seemed to be an extra from Under the Tuscan Sun – tall, dark and handsome. Well now this is getting better. Cautiously we asked him how much the fare would be – he shrugged his shoulders as only Italians can do and estimated not more than 10 Euros. Wow good looking and honest! We arrived at the hotel easily under the 10 Euro estimate and he got a big fat tip for his troubles. As he unloaded our luggage he passed my suitcase to me with a smile and said “Buena Sera” – how cool. I am finally in Italy!
