Taking a selfie

Do you know how to do this properly?? You better learn before your next vacation. This is a whole science and those of us who were born before the year 2000 have no bloody idea how to do this. Let’s face it. Lots of us went on vacation with a camera and a roll of film which had to be taken to the local pharmacist to develop when you got back. It was only THEN that you realise your photos were crap. There was no “fat checking” in those days – or if there was it was too late as you had already spent the money for the development. (PS My husband is very well trained in this – he now takes a photo and holds his phone towards me so I can do the fat check…. you ladies will know what I am talking about. It is not that we are fat it is just that some angles are very unflattering) … anyway, sorry I got side tracked.

OK so back to these wonderkids of Instagram. They totally know how to do it –

1. Look up toward the camera. As you’re doing so, slightly raise your eyebrows to make your eyes appear larger. Then, think of something that truly makes you smile, which will create the look of a genuine happiness that will shine through in your photo.

(Can you imagine that – you have to pretend that you are happy. What a load!!)

2. Extend your head away from your neck. This helps create the look of a longer neck and sharper jawline. You can also push your shoulders down to make yourself look more relaxed.

Oh I have to try that!

4. Relax your mouth, and exhale, blowing air through your lips. Whether you choose to then keep your mouth loosely open or fully closed in your selfie, blowing air through your lips before you snap a pic keeps your mouth from looking tense in your pic. Bonus: It also makes your pout look more plump.

It also helps if you keep your thumb out of the picture and check on your background. You never know what is going on behind you.

Having really great cameras on our cell phones makes it easy to capture images – but selfies are not something new. They have been around for a while.

Now there is a classic example of someone who doesn’t have the faintest idea of how to do a selfie. He is not blowing out air to make his lips plump, he is looking straight on at the camera instead of standing sideways to look slimmer, he should be putting one foot in front of the other … oh the list goes on. I bet he lost a lot of followers on Instagram – silly idiot!

  1. Loved this one (especially the background of the laughing baby snd dad … dog in b/g squatting on head???🙃). Have a fabulous week.

  2. Got a good giggle out of this one Lesley! Totally relate to the “fat checking” and my husband is also well-trained – lol! (he gets it!) Now, if I can just get my kids/grand-kids on board. I’ve chased them around the room after a photo session so I can have a look at what they’re probably going to post on Instagram/FB! They love driving me mad!! It’s like a game for them!! Haha! (:
